Malkim Hair Shop is not a hair salon, it’s a hair shop. It’s not the kind of place that you need to put your face on before going there. It’s without judgement; come as you are. The challenge for us was to keep that separation without coming across Mickey Mouse.
The owner, Mal, just said “I want bad ass videos”. That is word for word what we wrote into the brief. The short statement videos are to live on their shop TV, Instagram/Facebook advertising, and eventually website background.
Ultimately, the videos had to represent two brands: Malkim and L’Oreal.
Both L’Oreal and Malkim are vibrant in colour, and cheeky in behavior. Our team wanted to play on the contrasts that Malkim Hair Shop as a brand portrayed. We wanted to use their brand colours in contrast with each other, emotions that juxtapose from frame to frame, and actions that went from subtle to explosive.
A personal goal was to make video content that the shop could be proud of and felt as though represented them and their passion.
